The Playgroup Curriculum


​Young children require a curriculum that meets their physical, social, emotional and intellectual needs at this particular stage of their development.  They need to be motivated, set challenges and stimulated through play and other experiences to help develop learning in the six areas, as drawn up by the Education Authority. 

We follow the guidelines set out by the Education Authority and these are as follows:

The Arts

Painting and drawing using a wide variety of materials;
Exploring colours and textures;
Using glue/scissors and a large variety of materials for junk art;
Dough
Dancing, drama, singing and music activities.

Language Development

Talking and listening in small and large groups;
Hearing and participating in stories and rhymes;
Becoming familiar with books and print in our environment;
Understanding that written symbols have meaning.

Early Mathematical Experiences

Sorting, matching, counting, ordering;
Early concept of size and quantity;
Counting rhymes and songs;
Use of mathematical language e.g. heavy, light, full, empty etc.;
Develop understanding of number, shape, space and pattern.

Personal, social and emotional development 

Help children gain confidence in what they do;
Promote independence and make choices;
Encourage children to problem solve and express emotions;
Help care for plants and animals;
Encouraged to consider the needs and feelings of others;
Establish positive attitudes towards health, hygiene and safety.

Physical development and movement

Develop social skills, such as turn taking;
Fairness and respect for others;
Extend children’s skills in running, hopping etc;
Awareness of space and the space of others;
Understanding simple playgroup rules.

The world around us

Observe, explore, investigate and select materials and equipment in a range of situations;
Use skills such as cutting, sticking, folding, pouring and building;
Recognise parts of the body and identify a variety of sounds;
Care for their environment;
Respect for living things;
People who help us and work in the local community;
Awareness of time e.g. seasons.
